Driving to Cooktown

For 2WD and vehicles towing vans you should take the fully sealed Inland Route (Mulligan Highway). Access Mulligan Highway from Cairns by taking the Kuranda Road to Mareeba or via Port Douglas by heading to Mossman and taking the Julatten turn off up to Mount Molloy.

From Cairns the jounrney is approximately 330kms and takes 4+hrs driving time. From Port Douglas it is 270kms and takes 3+hrs driving time

 

4WD vehicles can take the Coastal Route along the Captain Cook Highway to Daintree River where you cross the river on the Daintree Ferry and head to Cape Tribulation and the (4WD) Bloomfield Track which takes you up to the Bloomfield River and Wujal Wujal where the road is sealed again. Follow the road through the Cedar Bay National Park to Helenvale where you can take a refreshement at the iconic Lions Den Hotel before joining the Mulligan Highway into Cooktown. Allow 5+ hours. Serous 4WD drivers can try the CREB Track but check its open and conditions first

Hinterland Aviation Cooktown flights

Hinterland Aviation operates a number of flights daily between Cairns and Cooktown. Check the Schedule for times. It operates from its terminal off Tom McDonald Drive at Cairns Airport on the other side to the main terminals. If you are flying into Cairns you will need to get a taxi around the airport which takes about 15 mins. The flight is a treat in itself flying over the reef and coast where the rainforest meets the sea.

Cairns is a great place to hire a 2WD or 4WD campervan. There are a number of hire companies operating from Cairns. Hire a 2WD campervan and drive up to Cooktown via the Atherton Tablelands and the Mulligan HIghway or hire a 4WD camper and come up the spectacular coastal road and the unsealed Bloomfield Track.

Cooktown by Bus
Cairns - Cooktown Bus Service

The Cairns Cooktown Express operates a good daily bus service operates from Cairns to Cooktown and back. There are various pick up points in Cairns and the route travels through Kuranda and Mareeba. Journey time is approximately 5 hrs, leaving Cairns at 7am and getting to Cooktown at midday. It starts its return journey at 1.30 arriving back in Cairns at 5.45pm
